ADVISORY COUNCIL FORMED FOR HUBS INITIATIVE

FCC Chief Technologist David Farber to Serve as Chairman

(PHILADELPHIA) July 5, 2000 An advisory council consisting of world-renowned technologists and academicians has been established to provide guidance and to determine the future direction of the HUBS initiative. HUBS (Hospitals, Universities, Businesses and Schools) was created four years ago to create the nations first wide-area "smart region" by facilitating electronic communications between the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

SAIC serves as the lead systems integrator and program coordinator for HUBS and is working to integrate common platforms and create virtual databases which will allow HUBS users to send, retrieve and share information, and collaborate by accessing common tools such as those used for data mining and data warehousing. SAIC also is developing or encouraging the development and implementation of the projects software, middleware and hardware.

David Farber will serve as chairman of the HUBS Advisory Council. Farber is the Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunications at the University of Pennsylvania, and chief technologist at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Farber also serves as a member of the Presidents information technology (IT) Advisory Committee (PITAC).

"I have always been a strong advocate of technology and research and development (R&D), and I am pleased to see that the HUBS project intends to apply both to maximize its potential in the four-state region," said Farber. "The members of the Advisory Council are outstanding individuals who can assist the HUBS management team to successfully continue its efforts in creating a smart region."
