SAIC WILL HELP CONDUCT NEWARK CYBERDISTRICT

FEASIBILITY STUDY

HUBS Leader SAIC Part of Team to Assess Technology

and Environmental Infrastructure

 

            (MCLEAN, VA AND NEWARK, N.J.) October 22, 2001 -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) announced today that it is part of a team which was awarded a contract from the Newark Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) to conduct the Newark Cyberdistrict Feasibility Study for the city. 

Working with the NEDC, regional businesses, schools, community organizations and government agencies, the team will assess Newarks strengths and weaknesses with regard to the citys technology and environmental infrastructure.  The team also will make recommendations and develop an action plan to improve Newarks readiness to retain and attract businesses that store, disseminate and use advanced information technologies. 

This study is being done as part of the HUBS (Hospitals, Universities, Businesses and Schools) program.  HUBS promotes the use of technology to transform the intellectual and economic landscapes of the mid-Atlantic states and create a smart region with the technologies and skilled workforce to thrive in the new digital economy. SAIC is the HUBS program manager.

SAIC will provide technology and management consulting services to review the Newark areas current technology infrastructure, assessment of technological and environmental barriers to attracting high-tech business, Web site development and hosting, and coordination with community leaders to develop an action plan for creating the cyberdistrict.

and services available to create a collaborative set of solutions that improve the quality of life and enhance the economic viability of communities like Newark, said Charles S. Steve Dawson, SAIC vice president and HUBS business development manager.

The Newark Cyberdistrict study team is led by Hillier Group, from Newark, N.J., and includes experts in urban design, information and communications technology, economic development, public policy and real estate.  Hillier Group is the largest architecture and planning firm in New Jersey, and its urban design practice group has worked extensively in Newark on related urban design projects with economic development and education underpinnings.   

The teams combination of backgrounds will enable us to provide Newark not only with a visionary plan, but also with an implementable product, said Hillier Group Marketing Director Michael Saltzman.

Other team members offer in-depth knowledge of Newark as well as a proven track record of working with cities, regional business leaders, community groups, educators and government agencies.
