Virtual Private Network Technology for NGI

The HUBS network infrastructure will build upon the existing Next Generation Internet (NGI) - a public infrastructure of gigabit/sec to terabit/sec throughput networks that supports a wide-range of high performance, low latency applications including medical collaboration and defense research. The NG-VPN will provide for end-to-end optimization of the network path to the specific application requirements. These mechanisms allow the NG-VPN to be independent of the underlying physical network infrastructure as well as capable of supporting a wide range of applications. For this reason, the NG-VPN is an innovative method for providing the high performance and satisfying the assurance requirements associated with HUBS applications.

The heart of the NG-VPN is the HUBS Services Manager. It monitors traffic and service performance to ensure that each of the HUBS applications receives the required backbone services. It also identifies and diagnoses problems when the appropriate service is not received. The HUBS Services Manager will be responsible for understanding end-to-end network attributes services and characteristics and match them with the application requirements. In this manner, the HUBS Services Manager provides (a) a trusted site for managing HUBS security and authentication services, (b) a site for the CORBA server that supports site configuration, set-up and operations, and (c) the coordinator of the differentiated service requirements with Network Operations Centers (NOCS) on the NGI backbone.

Thus, the HUBS Services Manager is not in the critical path of communications between the HUBS sites, but it enables each application to achieve its required quality of service. The HUBS Services Manager will be accessible to all sites on the network and interface to the middieware at each application that subscribes to the NG-VPN. The development of the NGI Virtual Private Network technology is lead by Telcordia Technologies with support from the Pittsburgh SuperComputing Center.
